Winter and spring wheat and barley saw decreases in production compared to last year

OLYMPIA, Wash. — USDA NASS released a Small Grain Production report for the Northwest Region.
Winter wheat
Idaho planted 750,000 acres of winter wheat in 2023, down 20,000 acres from 2022. Harvested area, at 630,000 acres, is down 80,000 acres from 2022. Winter wheat production in Idaho is 56.1 million bushels, down 12 percent from last year, with yield estimated at 89.0 bushels per acre, down 1.0 bushel per acre from 2022. Oregon planted 740,000 acres of winter wheat in 2023, up 10,000 acres from 2022. Harvested area, at 725,000 acres, is up 10,000 acres from 2022. Winter wheat production in Oregon is 40.6 million bushels, down 16 percent from last year, with yield estimated at 56.0 bushels per acre, down 12.0 bushels per acre from 2022. Spring wheat production in Idaho is 32.4 million bushels, up 11 percent from last year, with yield estimated at 82.0 bushels per acre, up 1.0 bushel per acre from 2022. Washington planted 500,000 acres of spring wheat in 2023, up 25,000 acres from 2022. Harvested area, at 490,000 acres, is up 20,000 acres from 2022. Spring wheat production in Washington is 18.6 million bushels, down 14 percent from last year, with yield estimated at 38.0 bushels per acre, down 8.0 bushels per acre from 2022.
Barley
Idaho planted 570,000 acres of barley in 2023, up 10,000 acres from 2022. Harvested area, at 540,000 acres, is unchanged from 2022. Barley production in Idaho is 60.5 million bushels, up 1 percent from last year, with yield estimated at 112 bushels per acre, up 1.0 bushel per acre from 2022. Oregon planted 41,000 acres of barley in 2023, up 5,000 acres from 2022. Harvested area, at 24,000 acres, is up 5,000 acres from 2022. Barley production in Oregon is 792,000 bushels, down 24 percent from last year, with yield estimated at 33.0 bushels per acre, down 22.0 bushels per acre from 2022. Washington planted 95,000 acres of barley in 2023, up 23,000 acres from 2022. Harvested area, at 84,000 acres, is up 24,000 acres from 2022. Barley production in Washington is 4.45 million bushels, down 12 percent from last year, with yield estimated at 53.0 bushels per acre, down 31.0 bushels per acre from 2022.
Oats
Idaho planted 45,000 acres of oats in 2023, down 5,000 acres from 2022. Harvested area, at 12,000 acres, is down 4,000 acres from 2022. Oat production in Idaho is 1.09 million bushels, up 7 percent from last year, with yield estimated at 91.0 bushels per acre, up 27.0 bushels per acre from 2022. Oregon planted 20,000 acres of oats in 2023, unchanged from 2022. Harvested area, at 12,000 acres, is up 4,000 acres from 2022. Oat production in Oregon is 948,000 bushels, up 13 percent from last year, with yield estimated at 79.0 bushels per acre, down 26.0 bushels per acre from 2022.
